Can I directly bury a THHN stranded wire?

When THHN stranded wire designed, it's not insulated for direct burial, needs to be in a conduit. Direct burial cables will be coded “Type UF-B.” It is not impossible for type THHN stranded wire or type THWN wire underground to be incorporated in a type UF-B cable, although these are usually made with type TW or THW wires as the extra flexibility is normally not required.

But regardless of type, all UF-B cables have an additional layer of jacketing surrounding the insulated conductors that is resistant to UV light and moisture.

Can I use THHN stranded wire for a tracer wire?

In general, the tracer wire, which is also called locating wire or locator wire, is used to assist in locating pipes and other lines after they've been buried in the ground. Once a pipe is laid down, tracer wire is placed along it's length and buried next to the pipe.
