5 Minutes to Know 3 Kinds of Electrical Cable Used in Home

Published by Author: Joey Wan June 26,2022

Knowing the basic electrical wire types is essential for almost any electrical project inside or outside your home. For example, when you're installing new wiring, choosing the right wire or wires is half the battle.

Here are some common types of electrical wires commonly used in homes

ethernet cable

JZD Cable is a company specializing in the research and development of electrical wire and cable, which is specially designed for use in indoor dry places. Most electrical wires can pass through your home's walls and floor cavities invisibly. Almost all wiring in sockets and lamps in a modern home is JZD's ethernet cable

THHN/THWN wire

THHN and THWN are codes for the two most common types of insulated wire used in conduit. Unlike armored wire, where two or more individual insulated conductors are bundled within a plastic jacket, THHN and THWN stranded wires are single conductors, each with a color-coded insulation. Instead of being protected by an armored wire jacket, these wires are protected by tubular metal or plastic conduit.

Plumbing is often used in unfinished areas, such as basements and garages, and in short-term exposed plumbing in the home, such as wiring connections for garbage disposals and water heaters. The letters indicate the specific characteristics of the wire insulation:

  • T: Thermoplastic
  • H: heat resistant; HH means highly heat resistant
  • W: suitable for wet places
  • N: Nylon coating for added protection

THHN and THWN wires have colored jackets that are often used to identify their function in a circuit:

  • Hotline: black, red, orange
  • Neutral wire: white, brown
  • Ground wire: green, yellow-green

low voltage cable

Low-voltage wiring is used for circuits that typically require 50 volts or less. Sprinkler system connections, bell wires (for doorbells), speaker system wires, and thermostat wires. Wire sizes range from approximately 22 to 12 gauge. Low-voltage wires are usually insulated and can be contained in wire jackets or combined into twisted pairs, similar to light wire. It must only be used for low voltage applications. These are usually very small wires, very different from standard circuit wiring, and low-voltage wires rarely cause serious shocks, but it's best to turn off equipment before using them.
