Project Name:  GMP Pharmaceutical Cleanroom Manufacturing Facility, Manila, Philippines

Project Commencement Date:2025

Project Details & Narrative:

Industry Context — Pharmaceutical Cleanrooms in the Philippines

The Philippines is rapidly emerging as a pharmaceutical manufacturing hub in Southeast Asia, driven by government initiatives to strengthen domestic drug production and attract foreign investment. Metro Manila, in particular, has seen a surge in GMP-compliant pharmaceutical facilities — including sterile injectables, oral solid dosage, and biologics production lines.

Pharmaceutical cleanrooms operate under the strictest environmental controls in any industry. GMP regulations mandate:

  • ISO Class 5–8 cleanroom environments maintained 24/7
  • Precise temperature (±1°C) and humidity (±5% RH) control
  • Positive or negative pressure cascades between zones
  • Continuous particulate monitoring with validated HVAC systems
  • Comprehensive documentation trail for every installed component

Cable selection in this context is not trivial. Every material inside a pharmaceutical facility — including electrical cables — must meet stringent safety, cleanliness, and reliability standards. A single cable failure can trigger a batch rejection worth millions.

The Project

In 2024, a Manila-based cleanroom contractor was awarded the turnkey electrical package for a new pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Metro Manila. The facility was designed to produce sterile injectables, requiring multiple ISO-classified cleanroom zones interconnected by pressurized gowning corridors and material airlocks.

The electrical scope covered:

  • Cleanroom lighting and utility power circuits (THHN in EMT conduit, exposed in interstitial spaces)
  • Office and administration wing wiring (NM-B for concealed in-wall runs, standard Philippine construction practice)
  • HVAC equipment feeds — AHU and fan coil unit circuits (THHN, larger AWG, conduit-routed)
  • Nurse call, intercom, and access control low-voltage backbones (NM-B multi-conductor)
  • Gowning room and airlock power outlets (THHN in surface-mounted raceway)

Why THHN + NM-B?

This project called for two distinct wiring methods, reflecting the dual nature of a modern pharmaceutical facility:

THHN (Thermoplastic High Heat-resistant Nylon-coated) — for all conduit-based installations:

  • Nylon jacket: Provides mechanical protection during conduit pulls — essential in cleanroom construction where conduit runs are long and complex
  • 90°C dry / 75°C wet rating: Handles the heat load from densely packed conduit banks in interstitial spaces above cleanroom ceilings
  • Gasoline & oil resistance: Critical for mechanical rooms housing standby generators and HVAC compressors
  • UL 83 listed: Full compliance with Philippine Electrical Code requirements, which reference NEC standards

NM-B (Non-Metallic Sheathed Cable) — for concealed in-wall wiring in office and support areas:

  • UL 719 listed: Recognized by Philippine construction practice for concealed residential and light commercial applications
  • PVC outer jacket + paper separator: Provides insulation redundancy in concealed spaces
  • 90°C rated conductors: Consistent thermal performance with THHN circuits
  • Cost-effective: For office/admin areas where conduit is not mandated, NM-B offers significant material and labor savings

The Contractor’s Challenge

The cleanroom contractor faced a procurement dilemma: source THHN from one supplier and NM-B from another, each with separate logistics, minimum order quantities, and documentation streams — or find a single manufacturer who could supply both under one quality management system.

They chose the latter approach — and issued an RFQ to JZD Cable.

The Qualification Process

As a specialty cleanroom contractor with a portfolio of FDA-audited facilities, the client maintained an exceptionally rigorous supplier qualification process:

1.UL Documentation Verification: JZD submitted UL 83 file numbers (THHN), UL 719 file numbers (NM-B), UL follow-up service reports, and labeling samples — all cross-referenced by the contractor’s QA/QC team

2.Sample Procurement & Independent Testing: The contractor purchased random samples and sent them to a Philippine-accredited testing laboratory for:

  • THHN: Conductor resistance (ASTM B3), insulation thickness, dielectric withstand, nylon jacket abrasion, heat resistance, cold bend
  • NM-B: Jacket integrity, conductor insulation thickness, dielectric withstand, flame propagation (UL 1581 VW-1 equivalent)

JZD’s THHN and NM-B samples passed all tests with results ranking among the top tier.

3.Factory Quality Audit: The contractor conducted remote audit of JZD’s Shenzhen production facility, verifying:

  • Raw copper procurement (99.95%+ purity certification)
  • THHN nylon extrusion process consistency
  • NM-B assembly line quality controls
  • Batch traceability from raw material to finished reel
  • ISO 9001 quality management system compliance

Color Coding Verification: The facility required specific color codes: black/red/blue for 3-phase circuits, white for neutral, green for ground, plus custom colors for emergency and life-safety circuits. JZD confirmed capability for all required colors on both THHN and NM-B.

How JZD Cable Won

After  3 months of qualification, JZD was selected over competitors based on:

  1. Dual Product Capability: JZD was the only supplier who could provide both UL-certified THHN and NM-B from a single factory — eliminating the need for the contractor to manage two supplier relationships, two sets of shipping documents, and two quality audits
  2. Superior Lab Test Results: JZD’s THHN samples demonstrated insulation thickness uniformity exceeding UL minimums by a comfortable margin — an indicator of production consistency that the contractor valued highly for a GMP-regulated project
  3. GMP Documentation Readiness: JZD provided full material traceability documentation — mill test reports, batch certificates, UL compliance certificates — in the format the contractor needed for their own GMP validation submission
  4. Competitive Landed Cost: FOB Shenzhen pricing on THHN combined with volume NM-B pricing, plus consolidated container shipping to Manila, delivered total landed cost savings of approximately [待确认 — %] vs. multi-supplier sourcing
  5. Responsive Technical Support: JZD’s engineering team answered detailed technical queries about nylon jacket formulation, NM-B jacketing compound, and flame-retardant properties within 24 hours — a responsiveness that impressed the contractor’s project manager

Delivery & Quality Assurance

Cables were manufactured in 8 weeks, with each shipment including:

  • UL Certificate of Compliance with traceable file numbers
  • Mill test reports for copper conductor (99.95%+ purity)
  • Factory test data (conductor resistance, insulation resistance, hi-pot test results)
  • Reel-by-reel packing list with serial number traceability
  • NM-B cut-length labeling with sequential production coding

Shipments were consolidated into 2 × 40GP containers, shipped from Shenzhen to Manila Port, and cleared through customs within 30 days

Installation & Outcome

Post-installation feedback from the contractor:

  • THHN pulled smoothly through EMT conduit with zero nylon jacket damage — the nylon coating’s lubricity reduced installation time by an estimated  15%
  • NM-B cable installed efficiently in office/admin wall cavities — the sequential foot markings sped up cut-to-length work
  • All circuits passed Philippine Electrical Code inspection on first attempt
  • The cleanroom achieved its target ISO classification with all electrical systems fully validated
  • Zero cable-related defects reported during commissioning or initial production runs

The cleanroom contractor has since listed JZD Cable as a preferred electrical cable supplier and initiated discussions for cable supply on two upcoming pharmaceutical projects in the Philippines.
