UL 758 vs UL 1015: AWM Standards and Selection

UL1015
In industrial control panels, data center racks, and electronic equipment wiring, UL 1015 and UL 758 are often mentioned together. Many engineers and sourcing teams treat them as parallel standard options, but in reality, they are related as a “parent standard” and a “specific product style.” UL 758 is the framework standard for Appliance Wiring Material (AWM), while UL 1015 is simply one single-conductor style under that framework.
Understanding this relationship is the prerequisite for correct selection and certification verification.

What Is UL 758?

UL 758 stands for Appliance Wiring Material. It is established by UL to unify the requirements for dispersed AWM products and to standardize evaluation methods.
UL 758 covers single insulated conductors, multi-conductor cables, and fiber optic components. It applies to temperatures from 60°C and above, voltages from 30V and above, and conductor sizes from 50 AWG to 2000 kcmil. It does not define one specific product. Instead, it establishes an evaluation framework, assigns a “Style Number” to each recognized AWM construction, and publishes style pages listing conductor size range, insulation material, temperature rating, and voltage rating.
The UL iQ database contains more than 7,000 different AWM styles. In the UL system, AWM is classified as a Recognized Component, used in listed or classified products. This means AWM is generally not used as a standalone end product but as internal or interconnecting wiring within equipment.

What Is UL 1015?

UL 1015 is a single-conductor thermoplastic-insulated style under the UL 758 framework. Its style number falls in the 1000–1999 range, corresponding to the “single conductor, thermoplastic insulation” category.
Key parameters of UL 1015 are as follows: temperature rating of 80°C, 90°C, or 105°C; voltage rating of 600V AC or 750V DC; conductor size range from 30 AWG to 2000 kcmil; extruded PVC insulation, with optional oil-resistant grades. Conductors can be solid or stranded, bare copper or tinned copper. The product must pass the VW-1 vertical flame test.
UL 1015 is not an independent standard. Its technical requirements and test methods come from UL 758. UL 758 specifies general evaluation methods such as tensile strength, elongation, spark test, and dielectric withstand. UL 1015 is simply one defined product style under it.
Since UL 1015 technical requirements come from UL 758, let us look at the specific tests UL 758 applies to this type of product.

UL 758 Testing Requirements

UL 758 specifies general test methods for AWM products, while UL 1015, as a specific style, has corresponding specific requirements.
Tensile strength and elongation tests evaluate the mechanical properties of the insulation. UL 1015 requires tensile strength of no less than 10.3 MPa and elongation of no less than 100%. Heat aging tests simulate performance changes after long-term high-temperature exposure, requiring at least 75% retention of tensile strength and at least 65% retention of elongation after aging.
Heat deformation tests evaluate insulation deformation under high temperature and pressure, with thickness reduction not exceeding 50%. Thermal shock and cold bend tests check whether the insulation cracks under extreme temperatures. The VW-1 vertical flame test verifies flame retardancy.
These tests together ensure the safety and reliability of UL 1015 wire in internal equipment wiring.

Comparison with Other AWM Styles

There are many different styles under UL 758, and UL 1015 is only one of them.
UL 1007 is another single-conductor PVC-insulated style, rated 300V and 80°C, with thinner insulation walls than UL 1015. UL 1015’s 600V and 105°C ratings make it suitable for higher voltage and higher temperature applications.
UL 1015 and UL 1230 often appear on the same product. UL 1230 is the MTW (Machine Tool Wire) version of UL 1015, adding the MTW listing for field wiring of machine tools and industrial equipment.
UL 1015 and UL 3266 differ in insulation material. UL 3266 uses cross-linked polyethylene insulation with a higher temperature rating, but UL 1015 remains the mainstream choice for 600V applications.

Applications in Data Centers and Industrial Control Panels

UL 1015 wire performs specific tasks in data centers and industrial control panels, backed by UL 758 certification.
Inside data center racks: Used for rack PDUs, server power modules, and in-cabinet distribution. Our products hold the UL 758 listing (600V, 105°C), safely covering 480V systems and high-temperature rack environments.
Industrial control panels: Used for relays, distribution boards, and instrument wiring. The PVC insulation offers moisture/oil resistance and VW-1 flame certification. We also offer the UL 1015-MTW version for dual compliance (internal and field wiring).
Inside electronic equipment: Used for internal connections in transformers, motors, and modules. Our wires meet UL 758 and RoHS standards. Tinned copper options are available for corrosive environments.

Selection Verification Points

When specifying UL 1015 wire, confirm the following:
  • Whether the product has UL 758 recognition (AWM Style 1015)
  • Conductor material is bare or tinned copper, meeting ASTM B3 or B33
  • Insulation material is heat-resistant PVC
  • Temperature rating is 80°C, 90°C, or 105°C
  • Voltage rating is 600V AC or 750V DC
  • Passes the VW-1 flame test
  • If the project requires MTW listing, confirm the product is marked with both UL 1015 and UL 1230
  • For RoHS-compliant projects, confirm the product meets RoHS requirements

Conclusion

UL 758 is the parent standard for appliance wiring material, and UL 1015 is one specific style under it. The former establishes the evaluation framework and style numbering system; the latter defines the specific parameters for single-conductor PVC-insulated wire. In industrial control panels and data center rack wiring, UL 1015 has become a mainstream choice for internal equipment connections thanks to its 600V rating, 105°C heat resistance, and VW-1 flame retardancy. During selection, verify UL 758 recognition, conductor material, temperature and voltage ratings, and RoHS compliance.
