“This doesn’t meet code. It all needs to be ripped out and redone.”
No contractor wants to hear those words. Yet it happens regularly. The cable looks fine. The numbers seem right. But the electrical inspection fails.
The usual culprits: NM-B cable without UL certification, 14 AWG wire on a 20A breaker, or non-UL-listed cable used on a U.S. project. Three mistakes, one outcome—tear it out and start over. Ampacity and Overcurrent Protection—Why 14 AWG Is Always 15A
Under 90°C insulation, 14 AWG conductors are rated for 25A. Seeing that number, many contractors assume 14 AWG can go on a 20A breaker.
But NEC 334.80 is clear: The allowable ampacity of NM cable must be based on the 60°C column. The 90°C insulation rating is only for derating calculations. The actual ampacity must be taken from the 60°C table.
At 60°C, 14 AWG is rated for 15A. Putting it on a 20A breaker is a code violation.

Bottom line: 14 AWG on 15A breakers. 12 AWG on 20A breakers. 10 AWG on 30A breakers. These pairings are fixed under the Code. No exceptions.

Application Determines Wire Size—One Size Doesn’t Fit All
Once you understand the ampacity limits, the next question is: what size do you need for different applications?
Take prefab houses as an example. Wiring in these projects is completed in the factory—there’s no fixing it later. Sizing decisions have to be right the first time. Prefab branch circuits typically fall into two categories: lighting circuits use 14/2 on 15A breakers, receptacle circuits use 12/2 on 20A breakers.
Lighting circuits use 14 AWG: LED fixtures and ceiling fans draw well below 15A—14/2 is sufficient and cost-effective.
Receptacle circuits use 12 AWG: Kitchens, living rooms, and other areas may have multiple devices plugged in at once—20A circuits are required by NEC.
