Client: Solomon Islands Ministry of Education

Project Name:Rural School Solar Electrification Program, Solomon Islands

Project Commencement Date:2025.2

Project Status: Completed

Project Details & Narrative:

Background — Powering Education in Remote Islands

Across the Solomon Islands’ 900+ islands, many rural schools lack reliable grid electricity. Classrooms rely on diesel generators — expensive, polluting, and prone to fuel supply disruptions. Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems offer a transformative solution: reliable, sustainable power for lighting, fans, computers, and educational equipment.

In early 2025, a multi-school solar electrification program was launched, targeting one schools across two islands. The program was funded by development partner and aid agency and implemented by 3 contractors.

The Cable Challenge — Solar in the Tropics

Solar installations in tropical island environments impose unique demands on cables:

  • UV Resistance: Rooftop solar cables are exposed to intense equatorial sunlight year-round — standard PVC cables would embrittle and crack within years
  • High Ambient Temperature: Roof-mounted cables must handle continuous operation above 70°C without degradation
  • Moisture & Salt Resistance: Coastal schools face salt spray corrosion, and tropical rainfall demands water-blocking cable construction
  • Rodent Protection: Rural school installations risk rodent damage to exposed cables
  • Long Cable Runs: Solar arrays on school roofs connect to inverters and battery banks often located in separate buildings — requiring low-resistance cables to minimize power losses

Why H1Z2Z2-K Cables?

H1Z2Z2-K is the European standard for photovoltaic system cabling under EN 50618, specifically engineered for solar applications and recognized globally by development agency specifications:

  • Cross-linked polyolefin insulation with XLPE outer sheath: Rated -40°C to +120°C, far exceeding PVC in heat and UV resistance
  • Halogen-free, flame-retardant: Critical for occupied school buildings
  • TÜV certified (EN 50618 / IEC 62930): Internationally recognized certification required by development agency specifications
  • Double-insulated construction (Class II): Enhanced safety for exposed rooftop installations, no separate earth required
  • 1.5kV DC rated: Suited for modern string inverter system voltages

How JZD Cable Won the Bid

JZD Cable’s solar cable expertise was the decisive factor:

  1. Core Competency in Solar: H1Z2Z2-K is one of JZD’s flagship export products, with established production lines, testing protocols, and TÜV certification already in place — not a side product manufactured on demand.
  2. Proven Tropical Performance: JZD’s H1Z2Z2-K cables were already performing successfully in solar installations across Southeast Asia and the Pacific, with documented field performance data.
  3. Complete Package Supply: JZD offered H1Z2Z2-K solar cables, YJV distribution cables (solar inverter to school distribution board), and BVR building wire (classroom lighting and outlets) — a single-source solution reducing procurement complexity.
  4. Competitive Pricing at Scale: Manufacturing all three cable types in-house enabled competitive volume pricing across the multi-school program.
  5. Development Project Experience: JZD demonstrated familiarity with international development project requirements — documentation standards, compliance reports, and transparency in procurement.

Installation & Performance

The solar systems were installed across the target schools throughout 2025. Each school’s system includes rooftop PV arrays (H1Z2Z2-K cables), inverter-to-distribution board connections (YJV cables), and classroom wiring (BVR building wire).

Post-installation monitoring shows:

  • Solar generation meeting or exceeding design estimates
  • Zero cable-related faults or degradation after  two months
  • Schools reporting reliable daytime electricity for lighting, fans, and computers
  • Significant reduction in diesel fuel costs and generator maintenance

Strategic Significance

This project positions JZD Cable as a qualified solar cable supplier for international development-funded electrification programs — a growing market segment as Pacific Island nations pursue renewable energy goals.
